1. Alternate-side parking

Alternate-side parking is a parking system in which vehicles must park on different sides of a street at different times or on different dates. The system may be used to keep streets accessible, distribute parking or allow activities such as street cleaning or maintenance.

The applicable side may change daily, weekly, monthly or according to another schedule. Drivers must check the local signs and rules carefully, because the timing and method of changing sides differ between countries and municipalities.

How does alternate-side parking work in Belgium?

Where half-monthly alternate-side parking applies, vehicles may park on the carriageway from the 1st through the 15th on the side with odd-numbered buildings and from the 16th through the end of the month on the side with even-numbered buildings.

When must vehicles change sides in Belgium?

The change of side must take place on the last day of each parking period between 19:30 and 20:00.

Does alternate-side parking apply everywhere in a Belgian built-up area?

No. The general half-monthly system applies when sign E11 is installed above the sign marking the beginning of the built-up area. It does not apply where vehicles park outside the carriageway or where local parking regulations impose different rules.
