1. Driving licence AM
A driving licence AM allows the holder to drive certain mopeds and light motor vehicles with a maximum design speed of up to 45 km/h. It is the European licence category commonly used for faster mopeds, scooters and light quadricycles. The minimum age, training, theory test and practical test requirements vary between countries. Slower mopeds or electric bicycles may fall outside category AM, depending on their speed, power and national rules.
What vehicles can you drive with a category AM licence in Belgium?
A Belgian category AM licence allows you to drive certain two- or three-wheeled mopeds, light quadricycles and speed pedelecs with a maximum design speed of more than 25 km/h and no more than 45 km/h.
Do you need an AM licence for a class A moped in Belgium?
No. A class A moped with a maximum speed of 25 km/h can be driven in Belgium without a driving licence, provided the applicable vehicle requirements are met.
Do you need an AM licence for a class B moped in Belgium?
Yes. A class B moped with a maximum speed of more than 25 km/h and up to 45 km/h requires a category AM licence or another licence category that also includes AM.
At what age can you take the AM theory exam in Belgium?
You can take the category AM theory exam from the age of 15 years and 9 months.
How many questions are in the Belgian AM theory exam?
The category AM theory exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. You must score at least 33 out of 40 to pass.
At what age can you take the AM practical exam in Belgium?
You can take the category AM practical exam from the age of 16.
Do you need practical lessons before the AM practical exam in Belgium?
Regional training rules apply. In Flanders and Brussels, candidates must complete at least four hours of practical training at a recognised driving school before taking the practical exam.
What does the Belgian AM practical exam include?
The practical exam is performed on an area closed to normal traffic and tests vehicle controls and basic manoeuvres. For a two-wheeled moped, these include exercises such as slalom, slow riding and emergency braking.
Do you get category AM automatically with another Belgian driving licence?
Yes. Holders of a Belgian A1, A2, A or B driving licence are also authorised to drive category AM vehicles.
How long is a Belgian AM driving licence valid?
The Belgian category AM licence is issued in the standard European card format and is generally valid for 10 years. Renewal does not normally require taking the exams again.
Can you use a Belgian AM licence in other EU countries?
Yes. Category AM is a European driving-licence category, and a valid Belgian AM licence can be used for the corresponding vehicles in other EU countries, subject to applicable local traffic rules.
