1. Scanning

Scanning means actively and continuously looking around your environment to gather information and spot potential hazards early. Checking mirrors, blind spots, side streets, and intersections. Watching for: other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, road signs, traffic signals and changing road conditions

  • Look ahead — about 12–15 seconds down the road.
  • Check your mirrors — every 5–8 seconds.
  • Look left, right, and ahead at intersections.
  • Check blind spots before changing lanes or turning.
