1. Parallel parking
Parallel parking is a method of parking a vehicle parallel to the edge of the road, usually in a space between two parked vehicles. It is commonly used where parking spaces are arranged along the side of a street.
Parallel parking normally involves positioning the vehicle beside the available space and reversing into it while carefully checking mirrors, blind spots and surrounding traffic. The vehicle should finish within the permitted parking area and close enough to the road edge without obstructing other road users.
Must cars normally park parallel to the road in Belgium?
Yes. A vehicle parked wholly or partly on the carriageway must normally be positioned parallel to the edge of the carriageway unless a particular parking layout indicates another position.
On which side of the road should you parallel park in Belgium?
A stopped or parked vehicle must normally be positioned on the right in its direction of travel. On a one-way road, however, parking is permitted on either side where the other parking rules allow it.
Is parallel parking part of the Belgian driving test?
Yes. Belgian driving-licence examination requirements include reversing into a parallel parking space on the left or right between two vehicles and subsequently leaving the parking space.
