1. Tunnel category

A tunnel category is a classification used to determine which vehicles carrying dangerous goods may pass through a road tunnel. Under the ADR system, road tunnels can be classified from category A to category E according to the restrictions imposed on dangerous-goods transport.

Category A has no ADR tunnel restrictions, while categories B, C, D and E impose progressively broader restrictions according to the potential consequences of the dangerous goods being transported. Drivers carrying dangerous goods must compare the tunnel category with the tunnel restriction code applicable to their load.

Does Belgium use ADR tunnel categories?

Yes. Belgian road tunnels can be assigned an ADR category from A to E to determine which dangerous-goods transports may pass through them.

How is a tunnel restriction for dangerous goods indicated in Belgium?

A C24a prohibition sign can be supplemented with the letter B, C, D or E corresponding to the tunnel category. Drivers carrying dangerous goods must check whether their load is permitted in that category.

Do all Belgian tunnels have the same ADR category?

No. Tunnel categories depend on the individual tunnel and its safety assessment. Different Belgian tunnels can therefore have different ADR categories and different restrictions on dangerous-goods traffic.
