Getting a driving license in Belgium

Do you need a Belgian driving license? This guide explains the rules for driving licenses in Belgium, where to take the Belgian driving theory test in English, plus tips on the Belgian driving test.

Driving license: Category AM

A category AM driving licence is required for drivers of mopeds, scooters and light motor-powered with a maximum engine capacity of 50 cc or a maximum rated power equal to or less than 4 kW (electric motors) and whose maximum speed does not exceed 45 km/h.

Driving license: Category A1 - A2 - A

From the age of 18, a category A1 licence is required for drivers of motorcycles with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc, with maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp) and a maximum power/weight ratio of 0.1 kW per kg.

Driving license: Category B

A category B driving licence is required for drivers of motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass not in excess of 3,500 kg and which are designed and built to carry a maximum of 8 passengers in addition to the driver.

Driving license: Category B + code 96 - B+E

The holder of a driving licence valid for category B, which does have the code 96 (after passing tests) may drive a combination made up of a category B vehicle and a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg, subject to the maximum authorised mass of this combination not exceeding 4,250 kg.

Driving license: Category C - C1

A category C1 driving licence is required for drivers of motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg and which are designed and built to carry a maximum of 8 passengers in addition to the driver.

Driving license: Category C1E - CE

For a (semi-)trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg, a category C-C1 driving licence is sufficient. Otherwise, a category CE-C1E driving licence CE-C1E is required.

Driving license: Category D1 - D

A category D1 driving licence is required for drivers of motor vehicles for carrying passengers with 9 to 16 seats, in addition to the driver’s seat.

Driving license: Category D1E - DE

For a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg, a category D-D1 driving licence is sufficient. Otherwise a category DE-D1E driving licence is required.

Driving license: Category G

A category G driving licence is required for drivers of agricultural vehicles, as well as for vehicles registered as agricultural equipment, motorised cultivators or combine harvesters, produced from 01/10/1982.
