3. Zone
A traffic zone is an area in which a traffic rule applies throughout all included roads or road sections. The rule normally begins at a zone-entry sign and remains applicable until the corresponding end-of-zone sign is passed.
Zones may regulate speed, parking, access, vehicle categories, emissions or other traffic behaviour. The signs used, the roads covered and the effect of intersections or local exceptions depend on local traffic law.

How do people refer to traffic zones in Portugal?
Portuguese law uses sinais de zona for zonal signs and zona de velocidade limitada for a speed-limited zone. Other zones can regulate parking, access or emissions.

Where does a zone rule apply in Portugal?
A speed-zone entrance sets the maximum shown for the designated area. Read supplementary panels for the scope of access or parking restrictions; the same word zone can accompany quite different symbols.

Is every Portuguese traffic zone limited to 30 km/h?
No. The general speed-zone sign displays the applicable maximum. A specifically designated Zona 30 km/h includes traffic-calming measures intended to keep speeds at or below 30 km/h. Parking or emissions zones do not create that speed limit merely by being zones.

How do you know when a traffic zone ends in Portugal?
Use the matching end sign for the particular restriction. Portuguese signs can end a speed restriction or all zone prohibitions; read the symbols rather than assuming every end panel has the same effect.
