Minimum speedSlovakia
1. Minimum speed
A minimum speed is the lowest speed that vehicles are required to maintain on a particular road or under specified conditions. Minimum-speed rules are intended to prevent vehicles travelling unnecessarily slowly from disrupting traffic or creating large speed differences between road users.
A minimum speed does not require drivers to maintain that speed when traffic, weather, visibility, road conditions or safety require them to slow down. The way minimum speeds are indicated and enforced varies between countries.
What is Slovakia’s general motorway minimum speed?
The Road Traffic Act sets a general motorway minimum of 80 km/h. Exceptions include entering or leaving the motorway, parallel traffic and other situations where safety or smooth traffic flow requires a lower speed.

Is Slovakia’s 60 km/h motor-vehicle-road threshold also a continuous driving minimum?
No. For a cesta pre motorové vozidlá, the 60 km/h figure is a minimum design-speed admission condition. It is different from the actual 80 km/h motorway rule and does not require maintaining 60 km/h in a queue.

What if a defect prevents my vehicle reaching Slovakia’s motorway minimum?
The motorway must be left at the nearest exit; if a parking area comes before that exit, the vehicle must be parked there. This defect rule differs from temporary slowing caused by traffic or safety. Do not try to force a faulty vehicle to reach 80 km/h.
