1. Axle weight limit

An axle weight limit is the maximum permitted weight or load carried by a single axle of a vehicle. It limits how much force an axle and its wheels may transmit to the road, independently of the vehicle's total weight.

Axle weight limits help protect bridges and road surfaces from excessive loads and contribute to safe vehicle operation. A vehicle can comply with an overall weight limit while still exceeding an axle limit if its load is distributed incorrectly.

Does Belgium currently have a specific axle weight limit traffic sign?

No. Under the current Belgian Road Code, there is no dedicated standard traffic sign specifically indicating a maximum laden mass per axle. Axle-load requirements are instead governed by the applicable vehicle and road regulations.

Is an axle weight limit the same as Belgian sign C21?

No. Sign C21 prohibits vehicles whose total laden mass exceeds the value shown. An axle weight limit concerns only the portion of the vehicle's weight carried by an individual axle or axle group.

Will Belgium introduce an axle weight limit sign?

Yes. Belgium's new Code of the Public Road introduces sign C22, which prohibits vehicles or combinations whose laden mass per axle exceeds the value shown. The sign is intended particularly for protecting structures such as bridges.
