1. Snow
Snow can make roads slippery, reduce visibility and greatly increase stopping distances. Drivers should reduce speed, increase their following distance and accelerate, steer and brake smoothly to avoid losing control. Snow or ice should be removed from the windows, mirrors and lights before driving, and suitable tyres or other winter equipment may be required depending on the country and road conditions.
Do you have to reduce your speed in snow in Belgium?
Yes. Belgian traffic rules require drivers to adapt their speed to the weather conditions, visibility and condition of the road. A posted speed limit is therefore not necessarily a safe speed when the road is covered with snow or ice.
Are winter tyres mandatory in Belgium?
No. Winter tyres are not generally mandatory in Belgium, although they are recommended in cold and snowy conditions because they can provide better grip.
When may snow chains be used in Belgium?
Snow chains may be used only when there is snow or ice on the road. They should not be used on a clear road surface.
Are studded tyres allowed in Belgium?
Studded tyres are generally prohibited. Their use may exceptionally be authorised when weather conditions justify it and under specific conditions.
When must rear fog lights be used during snowfall in Belgium?
Rear fog lights must be used when snowfall reduces visibility to less than approximately 100 metres. They must not be used in other circumstances unless another permitted condition applies.
May front fog lights be used during snowfall in Belgium?
Yes. Front fog lights may be used during snowfall. They may replace the dipped or main-beam headlights or be used together with them under the applicable rules.
