Seatbelt

Anyone who participates in a passenger car in traffic must always wear the seatbelt or be protected by an adapted and approved security system, such as a carrycot or child seat.

Siren

A siren is a sound signal that priority vehicles use to warn other road users that they have to pass.

Slippery road

Road slipperiness is a condition of low skid resistance due to insufficient road friction. It is a result of snow, ice, water, loose material and the texture of the road surface on the traction produced by the wheels of a vehicle. Road slipperiness can be measured either in terms of the friction between a freely-spinning wheel and the ground, or the braking distance of a braking vehicle, and is related to the coefficient of friction between the tyre and the road surface.

Slope

A slope or grade of a road refers to the tangent of the angle of the road to the horizontal. It is a special case of the slope, where zero indicates horizontality. A larger number indicates higher or steeper degree of 'tilt'.

Snow chains

Snow chains are devices fitted to the tires of vehicles to provide maximum traction when driving through snow and ice. Snow chains attach to the drive wheels of a vehicle or special systems deploy chains which swing under the tires automatically. Although named after steel chain, snow chains may be made of other materials and in a variety of patterns and strengths. Chains are usually sold in pairs and often must be purchased to match a particular tire size.

Spare tire

A spare tire (also called spare wheel) is an additional wheel with a tire for a motor vehicle. It is intended as a replacement for a car tire when it is leaked along the way.

Speed

The speed depends on the type of road and the conditions in which you are driving. Do not drive faster than the speed limit and make sure you can drive safely and comfortably.

Speed bump

A speed bump is a traffic calming device that use vertical deflection to slow motor-vehicle traffic in order to improve safety conditions. Variations include the speed hump, speed cushion and speed table.

Square

A square is an open space, where a public road opens or several public roads come together, and where the location allows traffic and other activities to be organized together.

Steering

Steering is the collection of components, linkages, etc. which allows any vehicle to follow the desired course. The primary purpose of the steering system is to allow the driver to guide the vehicle. Both hands should be placed on opposite sides of the steering wheel (i.e., left hand between 8 and 10 o’clock and right hand between 2 and 4 o’clock). This position is comfortable and on high-speed roads it allows you to make turns without taking your hands from the wheel.

Stop sign

A stop sign is a traffic sign designed to notify drivers that they must come to a complete stop and make sure the intersection is safely clear of vehicles and pedestrians before continuing past the sign.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight. When driving a vehicle, particularly at high speed, dazzling glare caused by a low Sun, or by lights reflecting off snow, puddles, other vehicles, or even the front of the vehicle, can be lethal. Sunglasses can protect against glare when driving. Two criteria must be met: vision must be clear, and the glasses must let sufficient light get to the eyes for the driving conditions. General-purpose sunglasses may be too dark, or otherwise unsuitable for driving.

Suspension

The suspension is the system of tires, tire pressure, springs, shock absorbers and couplings that connects the vehicle to the tires. The wheel suspension helps to have a good control over the vehicle and ensures a comfortable ride over different types of road surfaces.

Tachometer

A tachometer is an instrument measuring the rotation speed of a shaft or disk, as in a motor or other machine. The device usually displays the revolutions per minute (RPM) on a calibrated analogue dial, but digital displays are increasingly common.

Tailgating

Tailgating is when a driver drives behind another vehicle while not leaving sufficient distance to stop without causing a collision if the vehicle in front stops suddenly. The safe distance for following another vehicle varies depending on various factors including vehicle speed, weather, visibility and other road conditions. Some jurisdictions may require a minimal gap of a specified distance or time interval.

Tire code

Automobile tires are described by an alphanumeric tire code, which is generally molded into the sidewall of the tire. This code specifies the dimensions of the tire, and some of its key limitations, such as load-bearing ability, and maximum speed. Sometimes the inner sidewall contains information not included on the outer sidewall, and vice versa.

Tire pressure

The tire pressure must be measured when the tires are cold. Consult the vehicle manual for the correct tire pressure. Most tires have wear indicators that indicate when the tire needs to be replaced.

Tires

Worn or bald tires can increase your stopping distance and make turning more difficult when the road is wet. Unbalanced tires and low-pressure cause faster tire wear, reduce fuel economy, and make the vehicle harder to steer and stop. If the vehicle bounces, the steering wheel shakes, or the vehicle pulls to one side, have a mechanic check it. Worn tires increase the effect of “hydroplaning” and increase the chance of having a flat tire.

Toll road

A toll road, also known as a turnpike or tollway or toll plaza, is a public or private road (almost always a controlled-access highway in the present day) for which a fee or toll is assessed for passage. It is a form of road pricing typically implemented to help recoup the cost of road construction and maintenance.

Traffic conductor

A device installed on the carriageway and intended to channel vehicles traffic. The traffic conductor consists of a road marking, either from an elevation on the carriageway or from both elements together.

Traffic jam

Traffic congestion is a condition on transport that is characterised by slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queueing. Traffic congestion on urban road networks has become increasingly problematic since the 1950s. When traffic demand is great enough that the interaction between vehicles slows the speed of the traffic stream, this results in some congestion. As demand approaches the capacity of a road, extreme traffic congestion sets in. When vehicles are fully stopped for periods of time, this is known as a traffic jam. Traffic congestion can lead to drivers becoming frustrated and engaging in road rage.

Trailer

A trailer is an unpowered vehicle towed by a powered vehicle. It is commonly used for the transport of goods and materials. Sometimes recreational vehicles, travel trailers, or mobile homes with limited living facilities where people can camp or stay have been referred to as trailers.
