197. Roof rack
A roof rack is a load-carrying system attached to the roof of a vehicle. It can be used to transport items such as luggage, bicycles, skis, surfboards or a roof box when they cannot conveniently be carried inside the vehicle.
A roof rack and its cargo must be securely attached and must remain within the vehicle manufacturer's permitted roof-load limit. Roof-mounted loads raise the vehicle's centre of gravity and can affect handling, stability, fuel consumption and overall vehicle height.

Is a roof rack allowed on a car in Belgium?
Yes. A roof rack may be used provided it is suitable for the vehicle, securely fitted and the load complies with the applicable rules concerning securing, weight and vehicle dimensions.
How high may a car with a roof load be in Belgium?
The total height of a loaded vehicle may generally not exceed 4 metres. Objects carried on a roof rack or in a roof box count towards this overall loaded height.
How must a roof-rack load be secured in Belgium?
The load must be secured so that it cannot fall, drag, endanger other road users, affect vehicle stability or obstruct required lights or the registration number. Drivers must also respect the vehicle and roof rack manufacturer's permitted load limits.
