1. Expressway
An expressway is a road intended to carry through traffic efficiently, usually at higher speeds than ordinary roads. Expressways often have limited access, multiple lanes, separated carriageways or grade-separated junctions, but their design and legal status vary between countries.
An expressway is not always a motorway. It may have intersections, traffic lights or direct access, and the permitted road users, speed limits and special rules depend on local signs and regulations.
How do people refer to an expressway in Russia?
The signed category is дорога для автомобилей (doroga dlya avtomobiley), meaning road for motor vehicles. The motorway’s special access and conduct rules also apply to these roads.

What speed limit applies to cars on an expressway in Russia?
For an ordinary passenger car, the normal maximum outside built-up areas is 90 km/h on a non-motorway road. Suitable signed roads for motor vehicles can have an authorised limit up to 110 km/h. Follow the actual limit; the designation alone does not mean 110 km/h.

Who may use an expressway in Russia?
Check the vehicle classes admitted by sign 5.3 as well as the motorway restrictions extended to this road. Pedestrians, personal mobility users, domestic animals, bicycles, mopeds, tractors and self-propelled machinery are excluded. Other vehicles must also satisfy the technical or condition-based admission requirement; being motorised is not enough.

What should I do if I miss an expressway exit in Russia?
Continue to the next exit and choose a safe onward route. Do not reverse, make a U-turn or cross the central reservation to reach a missed exit.
