1. Bollards

Bollards are short posts installed on or beside a road, footpath, cycle path or other traffic area. They can be used to guide traffic, prevent vehicles from entering certain areas, protect pedestrians or infrastructure, or discourage illegal parking.

Bollards may be fixed, removable, flexible or retractable. Drivers should never pass between or around bollards when they are being used to close an area to their type of vehicle.

What are bollards used for on Belgian roads?

Bollards can be used to restrict motor-vehicle access, prevent unwanted parking, guide road users or separate areas intended for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles.

Can bollards be used to close a Belgian street to motor vehicles?

Yes. Bollards can form a physical closure that prevents motor vehicles from entering or passing through a street while access may remain possible for pedestrians or cyclists.

May a driver simply pass around a bollard in Belgium?

No. Drivers must respect the road layout, traffic signs and access restrictions in force. If bollards are being used to close a road or exclude motor vehicles, the presence of physical space beside them does not give a driver permission to pass.
