OvertakingWallonia
1. Overtaking
Overtaking is the act of passing another road user travelling in the same direction. It normally involves moving to another position or lane, passing the slower road user and returning to the appropriate position when it is safe.
Before overtaking, a driver should make sure there is sufficient visibility and space, check mirrors and blind spots, signal when required and ensure that no other road user is already overtaking. The manoeuvre must be completed without exceeding the speed limit or endangering other road users.
On which side must you normally overtake in Belgium?
Overtaking normally takes place on the left. An important exception is when the driver ahead has indicated an intention to turn left or stop on the left side and has moved left to perform that movement; in that situation, overtaking may take place on the right.
What must you check before overtaking in Belgium?
You must make sure that the road is clear far enough ahead, that no driver behind has already started overtaking, that you can return to the right without obstructing others and that the overtaking manoeuvre can be completed in a very short time.
When is overtaking prohibited in Belgium?
Overtaking on the left is prohibited in several situations, including where there is insufficient visibility, at certain intersections and railway crossings, near the crest of a hill or in a bend when visibility is insufficient, and when a vehicle is stopping or approaching an uncontrolled pedestrian or cyclist crossing in circumstances covered by the Road Code.
