Traffic rules

The traffic rules describe how a road user must act on the public road, which includes obligations but also advice on how to drive sensibly and safely. All road users must know and apply the traffic rules.

10. Driving license

A driving license is a document with which a driver of a motor vehicle can demonstrate that he / she has sufficient knowledge, insight and skills to be able to drive a motor vehicle of a certain category.

Driving license AM

Theory exam

  • For the theory-exam driving license AM you must be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
  • The theory exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions that you must solve on a computer in an examination center.
  • To succeed you must reach at least 41 at 50, you lose 1 point per error.
  • The exam can be taken with an interpreter in Dutch, French, German or English.
  • The theory exam costs 15 euros, also take your identity card and possibly bring your glasses.
  • If you were unsuccessful for the theory exam you can retry as often as you want, but not on the same day.
  • The theory exam is 3 years valid if you have not achieved your driving license within this period you must again take the theory exam.

Practical exam

  • For the practical exam driving license AM, you must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must follow at least 4 practice lessons in a recognized driving school.
  • The practical exam consists of 2 parts: a test that proves you that you can operate your moped or four-wheeler and 4 basic maneuvers.

Drivers of a speed pedelec need atleast a driving license AM.

Drivers of a moped class A, such as a moped, do not need a driving license.

Driving license B

Theory exam

  • For the theory exam driving license B you must be at least 17 years old.
  • The theory exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions that you must solve on a computer in an examination center.
  • To succeed you must get at least 41 at 50, you lose 1 point per light error.
  • You lose 5 points per heavy error (violations of the 3rd, 4th degree or over the maximum speed).
  • If you were unsuccessful after the second attempt, you must follow 12 hours of theory lessons in an authorized driving school.

Provisional license

Practical exam

  • For the practical exam driving license B you must be at least 18 years old.
  • If you were unsuccessful after the second attempt, you must follow 6 hours of practical lessons at an authorized driving school.
  • If you take the practical exam with automatic gears, your driving license is only valid for vehicles with an automatic gearbox.

Return moment

  • The return moment consists of an introductory meeting, practical exercises and group conversation.
  • If you live in Flanders, you must follow an extra training of 4 hours 6 to 9 months after you have achieved your final driving license.

Drivers of a car need a driving license B.

Drivers with a provisional driving license must hang an L plate in their car.
