Study

Here you can study for the exam. Look up keywords and learn definitions about all kind of subjects.

Motorway

A motorway is a public road intended for the traffic of fast vehicles, such as cars, motorbikes, trucks and buses. On a motorway there is a central reservation between the two directions and there are no traffic lights or intersections.

Abs

Newer vehicles are usually equipped with an 'Antilock Braking System' (abs). Refer to your vehicle manual for more information on how to use abs. The abs system ensures that you can stop the vehicle without slipping. The abs system comes into operation when you have to stop very quickly and press the brake pedal hard.

Accident

An accident is often happening quickly. What should you do if you are involved in an accident?

Bike box

A bike box, advanced stop line or stop box is a road marking at road junctions allowing certain types of vehicle a head start when the traffic signal changes from red to green. Bike boxes are implemented widely in Belgium, Denmark, United Kingdom and other European countries.

Airbag

The airbag is inflated very quickly with a collision or heavy impact. The airbag forms a protective cushion and helps the passengers against injuries.

Alcohol

Alcohol and driving a vehicle are a very dangerous combination. Alcohol reduces attention, assessment and reaction capacity. A drunk driver is not only a danger to himself, but also to other road users. That is why the police often organize alcohol checks, alcohol intoxication is measurable and punishable from a certain level.

Alternate-side parking

Alternate-side parking is a traffic law that dictates on which side of a street cars can be parked on a given day. The law is intended to promote efficient flow of traffic, as well as to allow street sweepers and snowplows to reach the curb without parked cars impeding their progress. Some proponents also regard the law, which can be quite inconvenient for drivers, as a way to encourage the use of public transportation. In many towns and cities, alternate-side parking is reserved for certain times of year, or only used during a snow emergency.

Ambulance

An ambulance is used to transport emergency services to a place where urgent help is needed and to transport victims or patients to the hospital.

Built-up area

The built-up area is an area designated by the government where there is a lot of construction. Because of the higher population density, drivers have to take extra account of other road users. Pay extra attention in the vicinity of crossings, schools and parks.

Fire extinguisher

A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the user (i.e., no escape route, smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise requires the expertise of a fire brigade. Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent that can be discharged to extinguish a fire.

First aid kit

A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment that is used to give medical treatment. There is a wide variation in the contents of first aid kits based on the knowledge and experience of those putting it together, the differing first aid requirements of the area where it may be used and variations in legislation or regulation in a given area.

Automatic transmission

An automatic transmission, also called auto, self-shifting transmission, n-speed automatic (where n represents its number of forward gear ratios), or AT, is a type of motor vehicle transmission that automatically changes the gear ratio as the vehicle moves, meaning that the driver does not have to shift the gears manually. Like other transmission systems on vehicles, it allows an internal combustion engine, best suited to run at a relatively high rotational speed, to provide a range of speed and torque outputs necessary for vehicular travel. The number of forward gear ratios is often expressed for manual transmissions as well (e.g., 6-speed manual).

Reversing

Reversing is usually done when parking the vehicle. Drivers do not expect a vehicle to be reversing towards them and may not realize it until it is too late. If you miss your turn or exit, do not reverse but go on to where you can safely turn around.

Barriers

A barrier is a closing mechanism that serves to control the use of a passage or access. Other names that are used are barrier, lever and barel. There are both hand-operated barriers and barriers that are moved by means of a drive.

Battery

An automotive battery is a rechargeable battery that supplies electrical current to a motor vehicle. Its main purpose is to feed the starter, which starts the engine. Once the engine is running, power for the car's electrical systems is still supplied by the battery with the alternator charging as demands increase or decrease.

Blind spot

A blind spot in a vehicle is an area around the vehicle that cannot be directly observed by the driver while at the controls, under existing circumstances. Blind spots exist in a wide range of vehicles: aircraft, cars, motorboats, sailboats, and trucks. Other types of transport have no blind spots at all, such as bicycles, horses, and motorcycles. Proper adjustment of mirrors and use of other technical solutions can eliminate or alleviate vehicle blind spots.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brake and hydraulic clutch applications in automobiles, motorcycles, light trucks, and some bicycles. It is used to transfer force into pressure, and to amplify braking force. It works because liquids are not appreciably compressible.

Brake

Only the brakes can stop your vehicle. It is very dangerous if the brakes do not work properly. If the brakes make a lot of noise, give off a weird odor, or if the brake pedal does not work properly, have it checked with your garage. A vehicle that is pulled to one side when braking is also checked.

Braking distance

Braking distance refers to the distance a vehicle will travel from the point when its brakes are fully applied to when it comes to a complete stop. It is primarily affected by the original speed of the vehicle and the coefficient of friction between the tires and the road surface, and negligibly by the tires' rolling resistance and vehicle's air drag.

Bridge

A bridge is a fixed or movable connection for traffic, between two points that are separated by a river, canal, canyon, valley, road, railroad or another obstacle.

Bus

A bus is a vehicle intended for the transportation of people. Buses can have a capacity as high as 300 passengers. The most common type is the single-deck rigid bus, with larger loads carried by double-decker and articulated buses, and smaller loads carried by midibuses and minibuses while coaches are used for longer-distance services.

Bus lane

A bus lane or bus-only lane is a lane restricted to buses, often on certain days and times, and generally used to speed up public transport that would be otherwise held up by traffic congestion. Bus lanes are a key component of a high-quality bus rapid transit (BRT) network, improving bus travel speeds and reliability by reducing delay caused by other traffic.

Car

A car or automobile is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transportation. Basically a car drives primarily on roads, seats one to eight people, has four tires, and mainly transport passengers rather than goods. Cars have controls for driving, parking, comfort and a variety of lights. Over the decades additional features have been added, making them more complex but also more reliable.

Caravan

A caravan or camper is towed behind a road vehicle to provide a place to sleep which is more comfortable and protected than a tent. It provides the means for people to have their own home on a journey or a vacation, without relying on a motel or hotel, and enables them to stay in places where none is available. However, in some countries campers are restricted to designated sites for which fees are payable.

Cargo

A cargo or freight refer in particular to goods or produce being conveyed, generally for commercial gain. Cargo covers all types of freight, including that carried by rail, van, truck, or intermodal container. The term freight is commonly used to describe the movements of flows of goods being transported by any mode of transportation.

Charging station

A charging station is an element in an infrastructure that supplies electric energy for the recharging of plug-in electric vehicles—including electric cars, neighborhood electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. For charging at home or work, some electric vehicles have converters on board that can plug into a standard electrical outlet or a high-capacity appliance outlet.

Child restraints

A child restraint system is a seat designed specifically to protect children from injury or death during vehicle collisions. Most commonly these seats are purchased and installed by car owners, but car manufacturers may integrate them directly into their vehicle's design and generally are required to provide anchors and ensure seat belt compatibility.

Coolant

A coolant is a substance, typically liquid or gas, that is used to reduce or regulate the temperature of a system. An ideal coolant has high thermal capacity, low viscosity, is low-cost, non-toxic, chemically inert and neither causes nor promotes corrosion of the cooling system. Some applications also require the coolant to be an electrical insulator.

Crossing

A crossing is a location on the road that is intended to cross and which is marked as such. They are for pedestrians and cyclists.

Roadkill

Crossing animals can cause dangerous traffic situations. In green areas it often happens that animals cross the road.

Crossroad

A crossroad or intersection is a place where two or more roads or streets meet or cross. Crossroads may be classified by number of road segments, traffic controls or lane design.

Give way

A yield or give way sign indicates that merging drivers must prepare to stop if necessary to let a driver on another approach proceed. A driver who stops or slows down to let another vehicle through has yielded the right of way to that vehicle.

Traffic lights

By means of light signals, traffic lights control the crossing of an intersection, the access to bridges, tunnels and railway crossings, the access to parking garages and grounds, as well as the access regulation at factories, companies and other closed areas.

Crosswind

A crosswind is any wind that has a perpendicular component to the line or direction of travel. This affects the aerodynamics of many forms of transport. Moving non-parallel to the wind's direction creates a crosswind component on the object and thus increasing the apparent wind on the object; such use of cross wind travel is used to advantage by sailing craft, kiteboarding craft, power kiting, etc. On the other side, crosswind moves the path of vehicles sideways and can be a hazard.

Customs

Customs is an authority or agency in a country responsible for collecting tariffs and for controlling the flow of goods, including animals, transports, personal, and hazardous items, into and out of a country. The movement of people into and out of a country is normally monitored by migration authorities, under a variety of names and arrangements. Immigration authorities normally check for appropriate documentation, verify that a person is entitled to enter the country, apprehend people wanted by domestic or international arrest warrants, and impede the entry of people deemed dangerous to the country.

Cyclist

A cyclist is a road user who moves with the bicycle in traffic. If there is no bike path, they drive on the road with other traffic. Respect for each other contributes to safe and smooth traffic. Important safety features are bicycle lighting, helmet and a bell.

Cyclist street

A bicycle street is a street in which the cyclists are the most important road users. Motor vehicles are allowed, but cars are not allowed to overtake cyclists.

Dangers

There are many dangers on public roads, drivers have to recognize these dangers and respond in the right way. Here you will find an overview of the most common hazards.

Dashboard

A dashboard is a control panel usually located directly ahead of a vehicle's driver, displaying instrumentation and controls for the vehicle's operation.

Dashboard lights

There are various symbols/lights on the dashboard of your vehicle, they give information or warn about the condition of your vehicle.

This answer is incorrect. What does this traffic sign mean? Square sign with a circular not parking inside. Choices: Begin of a zone where parking is allowed, Being of a zone with a speed limit, Begin of zone where parking is prohibited, Begin of a residential area. The correct answer should be Begin of a zone where parking is allowed NOT Begin of zone where parking is prohibited. It is a Controlled parking Zone.
