Traffic rules

The traffic rules describe how a road user must act on the public road, which includes obligations but also advice on how to drive sensibly and safely. All road users must know and apply the traffic rules.

7. Safety

To improve the safety of the passengers and the driver, there are a number of safety systems in your vehicle. Below you will find the most important ones.

The airbag is automatically deployed in the event of a collision and protects against injuries.

The seatbelt is the most important way to prevent injuries in an accident.

Seatbelt

Anyone who participates in a passenger car in traffic must always wear the seatbelt or be protected by an adapted and approved security system, such as a carrycot or child seat.

  • In a car all seats must have a seatbelt.
  • The driver and all passengers must wear a seatbelt.
  • Drivers reversing are exempt from wearing a seatbelt.
  • The driver of a taxi is exempt from wearing a seatbelt (only when transporting customers).
  • Mailman are exempt from wearing a seat belt.
  • If their job requires it, priority vehicles are exempt from wearing a seatbelt.
  • For medical reasons you can obtain a special exemption from the ministry.
  • Pregnant women must also wear a seatbelt.

Child restraints

A child restraint system is a seat designed specifically to protect children from injury or death during vehicle collisions. Most commonly these seats are purchased and installed by car owners, but car manufacturers may integrate them directly into their vehicle's design and generally are required to provide anchors and ensure seat belt compatibility.

The seatbelt is designed for adults, therefore children must be transported in a child seat.

There are different types of seats for babies, toddlers or children.

Airbag

The airbag is inflated very quickly with a collision or heavy impact. The airbag forms a protective cushion and helps the passengers against injuries.

Distance

You must always share the road with others. The more distance you keep between yourself and everyone else, the more time you have to react. The space between vehicles is essential for driving safe and smooth.

  • Tailgating means that the following distance is to short.
  • The two-second rule is the recommended distance between vehicles in traffic.

Inspection

Vehicle inspection is a procedure mandated by national or subnational governments in many countries, in which a vehicle is inspected to ensure that it conforms to regulations governing safety, emissions, or both. Inspection can be required at various times, e.g., periodically or on the transfer of title to a vehicle.

  • During a technical inspection in an accredited inspection center, it is checked whether your vehicle is free from defects.
  • The technical inspection of vehicles has a positive impact on road safety and the environment.
  • The inspection takes place in an inspection center.

Abs

Newer vehicles are usually equipped with an 'Antilock Braking System' (abs). Refer to your vehicle manual for more information on how to use abs. The abs system ensures that you can stop the vehicle without slipping. The abs system comes into operation when you have to stop very quickly and press the brake pedal hard.

  • If there is a problem with abs, a warning light will illuminate.

Esp

The 'Electronic Stability Program' (esp) helps the driver to control the vehicle when it is in a critical situation. A microcomputer checks the signals from the esp sensors and checks 25 times per second whether the driver's steering input matches the actual direction in which the vehicle is traveling. When the vehicle is moving in a different direction, esp detects the critical situation and reacts immediately. It uses the vehicle's braking system to stabilize the vehicle. Esp will brake the wheels individually so that the vehicle is stabilized and steered in the right direction.

  • Esp will brake the wheels individually, stabilizing the vehicle and steer it in the right direction.
  • Traction control prevents the wheels from spinning as soon as the driver accelerates, thus improving controllability.

Gps

A Global Positioning System, also known as gps, is a system designed to help navigate on the Earth, in the air, and on water.

  • If you use your smartphone as a GPS, make sure you also have a holder so that it is not too distracting.
  • Some vehicles have GPS built into the dashboard, sometimes you need to update these systems manually.
  • A route planner consists of software with which the shortest and / or fastest route can be calculated.

Helmet

A motorcycle helmet is a type of helmet used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is motorcycle safety – to protect the rider's head during impact, thus preventing or reducing head injury and saving the rider's life. Some helmets provide additional conveniences, such as ventilation, face shields, ear protection, intercom.

Drivers of mopeds and motorcycles are obliged to wear a helmet.

A bicycle helmet is not mandatory, but it is much safer.

Safety signs

The safety signs are often used in companies or factories to provide information about safety.

This safety sign indicates the direction of an emergency exit.

Safety signs can impose an order, such as the mandatory wearing of protection.

Warning for high voltage.

No fire.
