1. Paso inferior peatonal

Which Belgian sign indicates a pedestrian underpass?

The Belgian F51 sign indicates an underground or elevated pedestrian crossing. Different versions of the symbol can show whether the pedestrian route passes below or above the road.

Is the Belgian F51 sign only used for underpasses?

No. F51 covers both pedestrian underpasses and pedestrian overpasses.

Is F51 a warning sign?

No. F51 is an indication sign that informs pedestrians of a grade-separated crossing facility.

Does an F51 underpass allow cyclists to ride through it?

Not automatically. F51 indicates a pedestrian crossing facility. Cyclists may ride through only when another sign or the road arrangement permits cycling there.

Can a cyclist walk through a pedestrian underpass?

Yes, where pedestrian access is permitted. Under the current Belgian rules, a person walking a bicycle by hand is treated as a pedestrian.

Can an electric-scooter user walk through a pedestrian underpass?

A person who is using a non-motorised personal transporter at walking speed follows the applicable pedestrian rules. Different rules apply to someone riding a motorised personal transporter.

Can a Belgian pedestrian underpass also contain a cycle path?

Yes. An underpass can contain a separate or shared cycling facility when this is indicated by the appropriate traffic signs or road arrangement.

Do pedestrians have to obey signs inside an underpass?

Yes. Pedestrians must follow any applicable signs concerning access, direction, separated pedestrian and cycle sections or temporary restrictions.

Does using an underpass change ordinary pedestrian behaviour rules?

No. Pedestrians must continue to avoid unnecessarily obstructing other users and must follow the rules applying to any pedestrian, cycle or shared facility forming part of the route.

Can a pedestrian underpass cross beneath a railway?

Yes. Grade-separated pedestrian passages are commonly used to cross safely beneath roads or railway infrastructure without entering the vehicle or rail traffic route.

Is an F51 underpass the same as an ordinary pedestrian crossing?

No. An ordinary pedestrian crossing crosses the roadway at the same level. An F51 facility allows pedestrians to pass above or below the traffic route.

Does F51 itself give pedestrians priority at nearby roads?

No. F51 identifies the grade-separated pedestrian crossing but does not itself establish priority at any separate roadway that pedestrians may encounter before or after the underpass.
