Are elderly people a separate category of road user?

Not generally. Traffic rules normally classify people according to whether they are pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, passengers or another type of road user rather than simply according to age.

Why may elderly road users need additional consideration?

Some older people may experience reduced mobility, vision, hearing or reaction speed, which can mean they need more time to cross a road or respond to traffic.

How should drivers behave around elderly pedestrians?

Drivers should remain patient, allow sufficient time and be prepared to slow down or stop when an older pedestrian is crossing or approaching the roadway.
