1. Crosswind

Crosswind is wind blowing across the direction of travel and can push a vehicle sideways or affect its stability. Strong or sudden gusts are especially dangerous for motorcycles, bicycles, caravans, trailers and high-sided vehicles. Drivers should reduce speed, keep a firm but relaxed grip on the steering wheel and allow extra space from other road users. Particular care is needed on bridges, exposed roads and when passing large vehicles or leaving sheltered areas, where a sudden change in wind force can move the vehicle unexpectedly.

Do you have to reduce your speed in strong crosswinds in Belgium?

Drivers must adapt their speed to the weather conditions, road situation, visibility and their vehicle. Strong crosswinds can therefore require a lower speed even when the posted speed limit is higher.

Is there a traffic sign for crosswinds in Belgium?

Yes. Belgium uses warning sign A37 for side winds or crosswinds. It warns drivers that strong crosswinds may occur on the road ahead.

Where is the crosswind warning sign used in Belgium?

The A37 sign is used on road sections where strong crosswinds frequently occur. Belgian placement rules provide for the sign where such conditions occur and a windsock is installed.

Which vehicles should take extra care in Belgian crosswinds?

Crosswinds can particularly affect motorcycles, bicycles, caravans, trailers and high-sided vehicles. Drivers should also be prepared for sudden gusts on bridges and other exposed sections.

Does Belgium have a special speed limit for crosswinds?

There is no general speed limit that applies automatically whenever there is a crosswind. Drivers must instead choose a speed that remains safe for the actual weather and road conditions, while respecting any posted temporary or permanent speed limits.

Will Belgium’s new Road Code still use a crosswind warning sign?

Yes. The new Code of the Public Road retains A37 as the warning sign for side winds.
