1. Motor vehicle

A motor vehicle is a vehicle equipped with a motor and designed to move under its own power. Motor vehicles include many different categories, such as cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks and certain mopeds.

The traffic rules applying to a motor vehicle depend on its vehicle category, weight, dimensions, power and maximum design speed. Registration, insurance, licensing and road-access requirements can therefore differ between types of motor vehicles.

Which vehicles can be motor vehicles in Belgium?

The category includes different types of powered vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, mopeds and motorised three- or four-wheeled vehicles, subject to their specific legal classifications.

Are motorised personal mobility devices treated as motor vehicles in Belgium?

No. Although they are motor-powered, qualifying motorised personal mobility devices with a maximum design speed of 25 km/h are specifically not treated as motor vehicles for the purposes of the current Belgian Road Code.
