1. Traction battery
A traction battery is a high-voltage rechargeable battery used to power the electric motor(s) in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (HEVs or PHEVs). Unlike a standard car battery that starts the engine, a traction battery actually drives the vehicle forward.
- Powers the electric motor to move the vehicle.
- Stores energy from charging (or regenerative braking in hybrids/EVs).
- Supplies high-voltage electricity to major systems.
- Typically lasts 8–15 years or more, depending on use and climate.
- EV manufacturers often offer 8–10 year warranties.
- Batteries degrade slowly over time (range loss).
