1. Slovakia

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Czechia, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine and Poland. Traffic drives on the right. The centre and north of the country are dominated by the Carpathians, including the Tatras, while lower and flatter terrain is more typical in the south and east. This makes mountain gradients, winding roads and rapidly changing winter conditions important considerations outside the main motorway corridors. Slovak is the official language, and visitors should expect written information on road signs primarily in Slovak alongside standard European traffic symbols.

For visitors, a key practical feature is Slovakia's electronic motorway vignette, required on designated sections of motorways and express routes; there is no physical windscreen sticker, and not every motorway section is tolled. Winter-tyre rules for passenger cars are condition-based rather than tied to fixed dates: suitable winter tyres are required on all axles when continuous snow, ice or frost covers the road, or when such conditions can reasonably be expected along the planned route. Slovakia also requires daytime lights throughout the year and applies zero tolerance for alcohol to motor-vehicle drivers.

Let's explore the traffic rules of Slovakia.

Which side of the road do you drive on in Slovakia?

Drive on the right-hand side of the road and normally overtake on the left.

What is the emergency number in Slovakia?

Call 112 for general emergency assistance. Slovakia also has separate national emergency numbers, but 112 can be used to reach the integrated emergency services.

What is the alcohol limit for driving in Slovakia?

Slovakia applies zero tolerance for alcohol to motor-vehicle drivers. Do not drive while alcohol may still be present in your body.

What is the speed limit in built-up areas in Slovakia?

The general maximum speed in a built-up area is 50 km/h, unless signs establish another limit.

What is the speed limit outside built-up areas in Slovakia?

For an ordinary passenger car up to 3.5 tonnes, the general maximum outside built-up areas is 90 km/h, unless another limit applies.

What is the motorway speed limit in Slovakia?

For an ordinary motor vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, the general motorway maximum is 130 km/h, unless signs impose another limit.

Is there a minimum speed on Slovak motorways?

Motorways may be used only by motor vehicles, and a driver must normally be able to travel at least 80 km/h. Exceptions apply when slower driving is necessary for safety, congestion, entering or leaving the motorway and certain other situations.

Who can use a road for motor vehicles in Slovakia?

A road designated for motor vehicles may normally be used only by motor vehicles with a maximum design speed of at least 60 km/h. Other road users are prohibited except where specifically allowed to cross or pass through.

Do you need a motorway vignette in Slovakia?

Yes. Vehicles covered by the vignette system must have a valid electronic vignette before using designated tolled sections of Slovak motorways. Not every motorway section is subject to the charge.

What types of motorway vignette are available in Slovakia?

Electronic vignettes are available for 365 days, 30 days, 10 days or 1 day. For a vehicle and trailer combination exceeding 3.5 tonnes under the applicable M1/N1 and O1/O2 rules, a separate trailer vignette may also be required.

Must you use daytime running lights in Slovakia?

Yes. Motor vehicles must use dipped headlights or equivalent lights while driving. Daytime running lights may be used instead of dipped headlights during normal visibility.

Are winter tyres mandatory in Slovakia?

For passenger cars and light goods vehicles, winter tyres are required on all axles when the road has a continuous layer of snow, ice or frost. Drivers must also equip the vehicle when, considering the season, such conditions can reasonably be expected along the route.

Must passenger cars carry snow chains in Slovakia?

There is no general requirement for an ordinary passenger car to carry snow chains throughout winter. However, where the Snow chains traffic sign applies, chains or an equivalent device must be fitted to at least one driven axle.

Are seat belts compulsory in Slovakia?

Yes. A person sitting in a seat equipped with a seat belt or other required restraint must use the available restraint system, subject to limited statutory exemptions.

When must children use a child restraint in Slovakia?

A child shorter than 150 cm must generally use an approved child-restraint system appropriate for the child. Specific exceptions exist, and a rear-facing restraint must not be used in front of an active frontal airbag.

Are motorcycle helmets compulsory in Slovakia?

Yes. Motorcycle riders and passengers covered by the rule must wear a properly fastened motorcycle helmet, except for limited vehicle configurations with approved protective structures and seat belts.

Can you use a mobile phone while driving in Slovakia?

A driver must not hold or operate a mobile phone or similar device while driving. Use is permitted through a hands-free system.

Does priority from the right apply in Slovakia?

Yes. At an intersection where priority is not otherwise determined, a driver must give way to a vehicle approaching from the right.

Who has priority at a roundabout in Slovakia?

Where the Roundabout sign is combined with a Give Way or Stop sign at the entrance, vehicles already circulating on the roundabout have priority. Drivers should therefore follow the priority signs rather than relying only on the shape of the junction.

Do pedestrians have priority at crossings in Slovakia?

Yes. Since 1 September 2026, a driver must allow a pedestrian who has entered a pedestrian crossing or is about to enter it to cross safely. Drivers must approach the crossing at an appropriate speed so that they can stop if necessary. Pedestrians must still not enter the carriageway when an approaching vehicle is too close for them to cross safely.

Must drivers create an emergency corridor in Slovakia?

Yes. When stationary congestion forms on a motorway or a divided road outside a built-up area with at least two lanes in the same direction, drivers must create an emergency corridor. With two lanes it is formed between them; with three or more lanes it is formed between the leftmost lane and the lane immediately to its right.

Do trams have special priority in Slovakia?

Yes. A tram that crosses the path of a vehicle travelling alongside it in the same direction has priority when the tram signals its turn. Other special tram-priority rules can also apply when vehicles turn across tram tracks.

How much space must drivers leave when overtaking cyclists in Slovakia?

The sufficient lateral clearance is generally at least 1 metre where the maximum permitted speed is 50 km/h or less and 1.5 metres in other cases. The same rule also covers overtaking pedestrians and riders of small motorcycles.

What speed applies when approaching a railway crossing in Slovakia?

From 50 metres before a railway crossing and while crossing it, the maximum is normally 30 km/h. If the crossing equipment displays a flashing white light, the maximum is 50 km/h.

What safety equipment must a car carry in Slovakia?

An ordinary passenger car must carry an approved warning triangle, reflective safety garment and first-aid kit. A spare wheel, wheel wrench and jack are also normally required unless the vehicle qualifies for an alternative such as suitable run-flat tyres or an approved puncture-repair solution.
