大気汚染は、人の健康、環境、生態系へ悪影響を与える濃度で、気体、粒子、その他の物質が空気中に存在する状態です。道路交通は排気ガスに加え、ブレーキ摩耗、タイヤ摩耗、道路粉じんなど非排気由来の排出によっても大気汚染へ寄与します。
交通に関連する主な汚染物質には、窒素酸化物、粒子状物質、一酸化炭素、揮発性有機化合物があります。車両から直接排出されるものもあれば、大気中の化学反応で生成されるものもあります。車両排出ガス基準、よりクリーンな技術、交通管理対策などが排出削減に使われます。
