1. Ukraine

Ukraine is a large country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Belarus and Russia, with a coastline on the Black Sea. Traffic drives on the right. Much of the country consists of broad plains and long intercity routes, while the Carpathians in the west bring steeper gradients, winding roads and significant winter conditions. Ukrainian, written in the Cyrillic alphabet, is the language used for road information, while major directional signage also uses Latin-script transliterations of Ukrainian place names.

Ukraine does not currently have a motorway vignette or a general toll system for existing public roads. Its standard speed framework distinguishes ordinary roads, divided roads and motorways, with limits of up to 90, 110 and 130 km/h respectively for ordinary cars. Martial law is currently in force following a 90-day extension from 2 August 2026, so temporary checkpoints, curfews, road closures and access restrictions can affect travel and may differ between regions. These temporary measures should be checked through current official regional and police information rather than treated as permanent national traffic rules.

Let's explore the traffic rules of Ukraine.
AI
Which side of the road do you drive on in Ukraine?

Drive on the right-hand side of the road and normally overtake on the left.

What is the emergency number in Ukraine?

Call 112 for emergency assistance. The nationwide service can coordinate police, ambulance, fire and rescue and other emergency services.

What is the alcohol limit for driving in Ukraine?

Driving while intoxicated is prohibited. Under the official alcohol-testing procedure, a reading above 0.2‰ is treated as a positive indication of alcohol intoxication. Drivers should not treat this testing threshold as a safe amount to drink before driving.

What is the speed limit in built-up areas in Ukraine?

The general maximum speed in built-up areas is 50 km/h, unless traffic signs establish another limit.

What is the speed limit outside built-up areas in Ukraine?

For an ordinary passenger car, the general maximum on ordinary roads outside built-up areas is 90 km/h, unless another limit applies.

What is the speed limit on divided roads in Ukraine?

For an ordinary passenger car, the general maximum on a road with separate carriageways divided by a central reservation is 110 km/h, unless a lower limit is signed.

What is the motorway speed limit in Ukraine?

For an ordinary passenger car, the general maximum on a road designated as a motorway is 130 km/h, unless signs impose a lower limit.

What is the speed limit in residential and pedestrian zones in Ukraine?

The maximum speed in residential and pedestrian zones is 20 km/h.

Are speed limits lower for new drivers in Ukraine?

Yes. Drivers with less than two years of driving experience are limited to a maximum of 70 km/h, where a lower road-specific limit does not already apply. Ukraine's first driving licence is normally issued for two years with this restriction.

Who is prohibited from using Ukrainian motorways?

Motorways are not open to pedestrians, bicycles and various other slow road users. Vehicles whose technical characteristics or condition limit them to less than 40 km/h are also prohibited.

Do you need a motorway vignette in Ukraine?

No. Ukraine does not operate a nationwide motorway-vignette system, and no decision has been adopted to introduce tolling on existing public roads.

Must cars use daytime running lights in Ukraine?

Yes, outside built-up areas. During daytime driving on roads outside settlements, mechanical vehicles must use daytime running lights or dipped headlights if daytime running lights are not fitted. This requirement now applies throughout the year.

Are winter tyres mandatory in Ukraine?

Ukraine currently has no fixed nationwide calendar period during which ordinary passenger cars are legally required to use winter tyres. The traffic rules call for tyres appropriate to the condition of the carriageway, and police strongly recommend winter tyres during cold, snowy and icy conditions.

Are seat belts compulsory in Ukraine?

Yes. Drivers must use seat belts where fitted and must not carry passengers who are not properly restrained, subject to limited legal exceptions.

When must children use a child restraint in Ukraine?

Children shorter than 150 cm must normally be transported using an appropriate child-restraint system in vehicles equipped with seat belts or child-restraint anchorage systems.

Are motorcycle helmets compulsory in Ukraine?

Yes. Motorcycle and moped riders must wear a fastened motorcycle helmet and must not carry a passenger who is not wearing a fastened helmet.

Can you use a mobile phone while driving in Ukraine?

A driver must not use a communication device while holding it in the hand when the vehicle is moving. Hands-free use is permitted, provided it does not prevent safe driving.

Does priority from the right apply in Ukraine?

Yes. At an uncontrolled intersection of roads of equal priority, a non-rail vehicle must normally give way to vehicles approaching from the right.

Who has priority at a roundabout in Ukraine?

At an uncontrolled intersection marked as a roundabout, vehicles already circulating on the roundabout have priority over vehicles entering it.

Do pedestrians have priority at crossings in Ukraine?

At an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing where pedestrians are crossing, drivers must reduce speed and, if necessary, stop to give way.

What does an amber traffic light mean in Ukraine?

A steady amber light normally prohibits movement and warns that the signal is changing. A driver who cannot stop at the required place without emergency braking may continue as permitted by the traffic rules. A flashing amber signal has a different meaning and requires caution.

What must drivers do at railway crossings in Ukraine?

Drivers must obey railway signals, barriers and authorised officials and must not enter a crossing when a train is approaching or crossing is prohibited. Where the rules require stopping, the vehicle must stop before entering the railway crossing and proceed only when it is safe and permitted.

What safety equipment must a car carry in Ukraine?

An ordinary car must have prescribed safety equipment including a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and warning triangle or equivalent emergency warning device. The equipment must be suitable and accessible as required by the traffic rules.

How far behind a vehicle should the warning triangle be placed in Ukraine?

When the rules require an emergency warning triangle or flashing red lamp, it must be placed far enough away to warn other traffic and no closer than 20 m in a built-up area and 40 m outside a built-up area.

Can wartime restrictions affect driving in Ukraine?

Yes. Martial law is currently in force following a 90-day extension from 2 August 2026. Curfews, checkpoints, temporary road closures and other access restrictions can differ by region and change at short notice, so drivers should follow current instructions from official regional authorities and the police.

What language is used on road signs in Ukraine?

Written road information is primarily in Ukrainian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Major directional signs can also show Ukrainian place names in Latin-script transliteration, making destinations easier to recognise for international drivers.
