1. Axle weight limit
An axle weight limit is the maximum legal amount of weight that can be placed on a single axle or group of axles of a vehicle. These limits are set to protect roads, bridges, and public infrastructure from damage caused by heavy or unevenly loaded vehicles. An axle weight limit ensures that each part of a heavy vehicle is within safe loading limits, helping prevent road damage and ensuring safe handling.
- Every vehicle distributes its total weight across its axles (front, rear, or multiple).
- Axle weight limit refers to how much weight is allowed on each axle, not just the total vehicle weight.
- Exceeding this limit can result in fines, increased wear, or safety hazards.
- Even if a vehicle is under its total weight limit (GVWR), it can still violate axle weight rules if the load is not balanced properly.
- Special permits may allow temporary exceptions for oversize/overweight loads.
