200. Car battery
A car battery is an electrical energy-storage device that supplies power to a vehicle's electrical system. In conventional petrol and diesel cars, the 12-volt starter battery provides the high current needed to start the engine and supplies electrical equipment when the engine or charging system is not providing enough power.
Car batteries gradually lose charge and capacity with age and use. A weak battery can cause slow or unsuccessful starting, electrical problems or warning messages, and the replacement battery should have specifications suitable for the vehicle.

Is the car battery relevant to technical inspection in Belgium?
Yes. The battery and electrical system form part of vehicle roadworthiness. A battery that is insecure, improperly attached, leaking or presents a risk of short circuit can constitute a technical defect.
Does every Belgian car use the same type of battery?
No. The required battery depends on the vehicle's electrical system and equipment. Vehicles with start-stop systems commonly require batteries specifically designed for frequent charging and starting cycles, such as EFB or AGM types.
Should you replace a car battery with one of the correct specification?
Yes. The replacement battery should meet the vehicle manufacturer's requirements for characteristics such as voltage, capacity, starting performance, dimensions and battery technology.
