145. Fuel gauge
A fuel gauge is an instrument on a vehicle's dashboard that indicates approximately how much fuel remains in the fuel tank. It usually displays a scale from empty to full and may also include a low-fuel warning light.
The reading is an estimate and can change slightly when the vehicle is on a slope, accelerating, braking or cornering. Drivers should refuel before the tank becomes completely empty.

What should you do when the low-fuel warning light appears in Belgium?
You should look for a suitable filling station and refuel as soon as reasonably possible. The remaining driving range varies between vehicles and should not be treated as a guaranteed distance.
Can you rely entirely on the fuel gauge when planning a journey?
No. The gauge only provides an approximate fuel level. For longer journeys, drivers should consider the expected distance, available filling stations and the vehicle's fuel consumption.
Why can the fuel-gauge reading change while driving?
Fuel moves inside the tank as the vehicle accelerates, brakes, corners or travels on a slope. The gauge system normally compensates for this, but temporary changes in the displayed level can still occur.
