1. Police signals

Police signals are hand signals or gestures used by a police officer (or traffic officer) to control traffic when traffic lights or signs are not being used — for example, during accidents, power outages, or events. They override all traffic signs and lights. Drivers and pedestrians must obey police signals at all times.

  • Raised hand, palm out - Stop (for traffic coming toward the hand).
  • Sideways arm motion - Go (inviting traffic to move through).
  • Arms extended to the sides - Traffic from front and back must stop; side traffic can move.
  • Whistle blow + gesture - Gets attention, often followed by a command (stop/go/turn).
