Prohibitory signs

A prohibitory sign is a traffic sign that tells drivers what is not allowed on that specific road or in that situation. These signs impose restrictions such as no entry, no overtaking, no parking, speed limits, or bans on certain types of vehicles. Their purpose is to clearly indicate actions that are forbidden to ensure safety, maintain traffic flow, and protect vulnerable road users.

Direction prohibited (road with one-way traffic).

End of the overtaking prohibition for trucks.

Vehicles with dangerous goods prohibited.

11. Trucks with trailer prohibited

This traffic sign indicates trucks with a trailer are prohibited. It means that trucks pulling trailers are not allowed beyond this point. Articulated vehicles and trucks with any type of trailer are prohibited. Solo trucks without trailers, cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles may still be allowed unless otherwise restricted.

12. Leaving less distance than indicated prohibited

This traffic sign indicates the minimum distance between the vehicle before you. It means that vehicles must maintain at least the minimum distance indicated between them — typically for safety reasons, especially in tunnels, on bridges, or in areas prone to rear-end collisions.

13. Using the horn prohibited

This traffic sign indicates using the horn prohibited. It means that using the horn (audible warning devices) is not allowed beyond this point, except in emergencies.

14. Overtaking prohibited

This traffic sign indicates overtaking prohibited. It means that overtaking of motor vehicles on more than two wheels is prohibited. You may still overtake: bicycles, mopeds, ...

15. End of the overtaking prohibition

This traffic sign indicates the end of the overtaking prohibition. It means that the no-overtaking zone has ended. From this point onward, overtaking is permitted again, as long as it’s safe and legal.

16. Overtaking prohibited for trucks

This traffic sign indicates overtaking prohibited for trucks. It means that trucks (heavy goods vehicles) are not allowed to overtake other vehicles beyond this point. All other vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.) may still overtake if allowed.

17. End of the overtaking prohibition for trucks

This traffic sign indicates the end of the overtaking prohibition for trucks. It means that the overtaking ban for trucks has ended. From this point onward, trucks are again allowed to overtake, as long as normal road rules permit it.

18. Begin of a speed limit

This traffic sign indicates the begin of a speed limit. It means the start of a maximum speed limit that road users must obey from that point onward, driving faster than indicated is prohibited. It applies until: a new speed limit sign appears or the “end of speed limit” sign.

19. End of the speed limit

This traffic sign indicates the end of the speed limit. It means the end of a previously posted maximum speed limit. From this point onward, the general (default) speed limits for the road type and vehicle category apply.

20. Begin of a zone with speed limit

This traffic sign indicates the begin of a zone with a speed limit. It means the start of a zone (not just a single stretch of road) where a specific speed limit applies throughout until an explicit end sign is posted. The limit remains in force until a sign explicitly ends the zone. Used commonly in: residential areas, school zones, city centers or traffic-calmed areas.
