1. 2-1 Road

A 2−1 road (2-minus-1 road) road is a narrow road layout designed mainly for cars and cyclists, where there is one central lane for motor vehicles and two advisory edge lanes on the sides for cyclists. Motor vehicles normally drive in the middle lane, and only move into the side lanes temporarily when passing an oncoming vehicle, giving priority to cyclists using those edge lanes.

  • Cars drive in the center lane when no traffic is coming.
  • When two cars meet → both move slightly into the edge lanes.
  • Cyclists always have priority in the edge lanes.
  • You are sharing space dynamically with other vehicles and road users.
