1. Braking distance

Braking distance is the distance your vehicle travels after you press the brake pedal until it comes to a complete stop.

  • It begins the moment you apply the brakes.
  • It ends when the wheels stop turning.
  • It’s one part of the total stopping distance.
  • What Affects Braking Distance?
    • Speed - Faster = much longer braking distance.
    • Road surface - Wet, icy, or gravel roads increase distance.
    • Tire condition - Worn tires = less grip.
    • Brake condition - Poor brakes = longer stopping time.
    • Vehicle weight - Heavier vehicles take longer to stop.
    • Downhill slope - Takes longer to stop going downhill.
